Dark Carnival tonight
The horror film festival is in full gear this evening. Read blog updates from Brian Hettsmanberger throughout the weekend. Here’s the first post.

Just caught the tail-end of “A Far Cry From Home.” In the short film, three rednecks terrorize a gay man in the woods after brutally muderering his lover. The film is super-violent, with pretty impressive gory sequences. This audience craves the violence; when the hero of the film smashes his tormentor’s head with the blunt end of an axe, the auditorium erupted with applause and laughter.
Next is a brief intermission then a Halloween-themed fashion show.
People and film fans mill around the BCT between films. There are merchandise tables set up where horror celebrities like Ari Lehman and Ken Foree greet fans. Foree was most recently in Rob Zombie’s “The Devil’s Reject’s” and Lehman has cemented a place for himself in the horror film hall of fame after protraying Jason Voorhees in the first “Friday the 13th.” He told me he’s worked in 6 films in the last year.
His hard-rock band First Jason will perform at the Dark Carnival After Party midnight tonight at Uncle Fester’s.
After a ghoulish belly dancing performance (think Vampira in “Plan Nine From Outer Space,” if she was a belly dancer…) the “adult screening” series kicked off with the hilarious Panty Kill. The film centers around Crotchless Panty Face, who (as you may have guessed) wears crotchless panties on his head. His weapon of choice is his boot with a knife on the toe. I promise, you have not been to a horror film fest until you’ve seen a man’s colon cut out of him…
Basement Boy, one of the Atomic Cinema hosts here in town, said his favorite movie so far was Panty Kill, although he said he hasn’t had time to see all the movie yet. I talked to him in front of the Bus-Chum where he and other dudes in costumes screamed at passing cars.
It’s all part of the show…
